Last Friday was my second weigh in day since being determined again to lose this weight. I got on the scales early morning when at my lightest only to find that I had put back the 1lb+ I had lost last week. After having gone another week surviving on 1000 calories a day and of upping my exercise to say I was disappointed is an under-statement. I was upset - angry - sick to my stomach and at my wits end. That night when watching the press previews on the news channel for the Saturday papers I noticed one of the head-lines said “Eat to Beat Diabetes”. I never buy a news paper as I prefer to read the news on line and watch the 24 hour news channel on TV, but Saturday morning I made a special trip to the top of the road to buy said news paper. |
Until the book arrived I didn’t have much information to go on, but I had got the gist of it through the news paper article - which was to cut out all sugar. This is not just the obvious such as cakes, sweets, biscuits etc., but also the hidden sugars in our everyday food which also includes bread, crackers, pasta, rice, and yup, even potatoes.
We have begun to read how since the very early 80s the medical profession couldn’t have got it any more wrong regarding saturated fats being bad for us and that if we cut out saturated fats we would lose weight. We now know that this advice has been slowly poisoning us. We now know that this advice has made obesity and worse of all type 2 diabetes rise to almost uncontrollable levels. We now know that saturated fat is not only not bad for us but actually good for us.
But I digress. After ordering the book and whilst waiting for it to arrive - through Sunday to Tuesday I started to cut down as much as I could on the food that I had already read about containing hidden sugar, such as bread, pasta and potatoes. Of course already I had stopped a long time ago with the obvious sugary foods although I had still been eating those to a certain extent as long as I still kept my calories down to the 1000 to 1200 mark. On Tuesday afternoon the Blood Sugar Diet book arrived and I spent that evening reading it from front to back, and then read it again. It made for a very exciting read.
At the same time in the 80s when the medical profession were experimenting and figuring out the way fat gathered in the body and coming to the conclusion that saturated fat was the culprit, trials were being done with how sugar causes the body to react and store fat. Unfortunately due to one particular man fat won out and it wasn’t long before health organisations and Doctors were feeding the fat information and advice to the public. Of course the food industry jumped on this as it was a multi-million pound wet dream to produce more and more fat free products highly laced with sugar to make them taste palatable. From here on in it was a steady growing of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
T2 diabetes has long since been accepted as a disease that is incurable. You get it, you live with it, and you get steadily worse, losing eye-sight and limbs and an early death. This doesn’t have to be.
It’s a fact that medical news and information takes a long time to filter down to the general public, and we are only just now hearing about how those that have had gastric bypasses not only lose weight but are actually reversing their T2 diabetes. The medical profession have known this for a lot more years.
The fat versus sugar argument has been going on since the 80s with the professionals and the sugar team have all these years still been conducting trials. Patients that have been using a no sugar diet to lose weight have been lowering their blood sugar levels to such an extent that they have been able to come off medication and return to normal levels. Unfortunately due to pressure from the health organisation and fear, Doctors have not been passing this information down to their other diabetic patients. Instead they have been giving the usual crap advice that they are ordered to give regarding eating low fat.
After reading the book through twice Tuesday evening and it all making sense to me I got up yesterday morning packed all food from my fridge and cupboard food that contains bad carbs which in turn contains high sugar content into bags and took them to give to my Daughter. My Daughter’s reaction to my news is for my next blog post.
I then spent the whole of yesterday sugar free. Completely and utterly. I actually hadn’t done bad not eating sugar from Sunday to Tuesday without knowing the full facts.
I will finish this post by telling you that during that three days of cutting down on sugar and one day completely free of sugar I have woken up this morning 1.8lbs lighter than I was Sunday morning. Here is me, who can’t even lose 1lb in a week losing nearly 2lbs in four days.
I am changing my official weigh in day from Friday to Saturday when I will write a more detailed, personal post of how I am coping on the full Blood Sugar Diet and of the diet itself.
