I do also own a beautiful sit up and beg Dutch style bike which I would love to ride. Unfortunately I have never been able to balance on a two wheeler, although I am still trying to learn to do so. I see so many people of my own age and older riding 2 wheelers and I really would love to do so myself.
I think that a lot of people are being put off bicycling due to all the scares of safety. The funny thing is, that one is many more times likely to die or get a serious injury riding in a car.
Very seldom is it bicyclists that push for helmets and hi-viz clothing, but in actual fact it's companies that stand to gain when selling these items and motorists that probably have never put their backsides on a bike and hate to see bicyclists on the road anyway.
Of course there are many "cyclists" that wear all the gear, but they are mostly cyclists that love the adrenaline of cycling fast across the cities, weaving in and out of the traffic, taking pride of the fact that they can beat the traffic jams to work.
As a bicyclist that bikes gently from home to the shop or to visit a friend or rides out simply for the joy of being in the open air, I see absolutely no need to dress for riding a bike. I dress for my destination.
I asked my Daughter the other day why she doesn't get on her bike occasionally. She still has the bike I bought her many years ago which she rode out a handful of times and which now sits in her garden shed unused and un-cared for. The main reason for her not riding was, that she can't carry shopping on it. I didn't bother to argue with her as I know she is one of these people that is adamantly against personally getting on a bike.
I could have told her that a set of paniers can carry a full weeks shopping. I could have mentioned that she could easily get a small bike trailer for carrying shopping or transporting other items. But I know I would have been wasting my breath.
As far as I am concerned why would I have a car and all the expense that goes with it, when I can bicycle, or in my case, tricycle.
I've added a video of bicycling in the Netherlands as I could watch these sort of videos for hours.
